Our Mission

Most people are familiar with bell peppers, which make tasty but mild addition to sandwiches, chilis, and other dishes. True foodies value peppers for their spiciness and the amount of heat they bring to a dish, as measured by their rating on the Scoville Heat Unit (SHU) scale.

Pepper lovers rate peppers according to hotness:

Mild – 0 to 4,000 SHUs

Medium – 4,000 to 15,000 SHUs

Hot – 15,000 to 50,000 SHUs

Fire hose range! > 50,000 SHUs

While bell peppers measure 0 SHUs, others, such as banana peppers, can rate up to 500. The hottest peppers can rate in the millions due to the high levels of the chemical capsaicin. For example, the Caroline Reapers measure from 1,400,000 – 2,200,000 SHUs, and Ghost Chiles go from 855,000 to 1,041,427 SHUs.

Not everyone enjoys (or can tolerate) the extreme heat of some peppers. Our site serves to educate gardeners and those who buy pepper or order dishes with peppers in them at restaurants on what to expect. Extreme hotness can enhance or destroy a dining experience, so we encourage you to be Pepperdodo-prepared when considering types of peppers to try.

Our Editorial Process

Our writers are gardeners and creative diners who love peppers. They plant them, they buy them, and they write about them in depth.
